Ssangyong XLV: Strikingly different
The Ssangyong XLV is a SUV in the Tiguan class and tries to score with full equipment. Smears must be taken with the engine and the headlight. A test with surprising results.
In Germany, the Korean brand Ssangyong is quite unknown, although it has been present for decades. This is also reflected in the approval numbers, which last year did not exceed the mark of 3,397 vehicles – with six models in twelve months. Since last year, Ssangyong wants to boost its sales figures with a new model: the XLV. The SUV in the class of the VW Tiguan is based on the Ssangyong Tivoli and was only stretched in length.
The body dress of the XLV is above all one: different. Swings, beads, edges, bulging fender, slanting windows, angular headlights, large tail lamps. There is some that is noticed by the external appearance of the XLV. The SUV is available exclusively with five doors, in eight exterior colors, front and all-wheel drive and two engines. With a 1.6-liter displacement and turbocharger, the gasoline engine delivers 128 hp and our test car with Dieselpower 115hp.
Looking at the interior, Asian playfulness awaits us with a trace of tristesse. Black piano lacquer optics alternate with gray plastic surfaces. Many gray switches on the steering wheel compete with red in the center console. The entertainment system is easily accessible at the height of the instrument carrier in the center console and includes radio, TomTom navigation system, Bluetooth hands-free kit, back-up camera and can also be networked with the smartphone and the iPod. There is USB and AUX connection. The view on speedometer and speedometer pleases, everything is easy to read and clearly arranged. Displayed are on-board computer, switching point display, outside temperature, tire pressure and more. If you like Korean gadgets, you can even choose the color of your suitcase according to the mood in the colors red, blue, yellow, sky blue, white and black – that’s not even in the Tiguan.
The heated leather steering wheel is well in the hand, the digital two-zone automatic climate control ensures regulated air exchange. Otherwise, everything that we expect from a well equipped SUV today: front and rear parking assistance, heated front and rear, cruise control, rain and light sensor, LED daytime running lights and even ambient lighting.
Good seating position, huge trunk
And otherwise? The seat position of the driver is also fine for large-scale editors, even on long motorway sections is quite pleasant. The rear passengers enjoy leg room, but they complain about the raised doors – they and the low seating position clearly limit the view of the landscape. The luggage compartment is a gigantic storage box with a capacity of 720 liters. A luggage net with attachments on the side and small storage areas for daily shopping as well as a 220V / 110V power connection are practical. Also practical is a separate large compartment under the trunk floor.
And how does the XLV go? The low displacement and the clear horse stands make it impossible to expect miracles. With a top speed of 174 km / h, the XLV is not one of the sporty SUV, but does not have to meet this requirement. There are other brands. Much more important is the speed, fuel consumption, volume and transmission. In order to get ahead on the highway, the Ssangyong needs speed. The manufacturer gives a combined consumption of 6.3 liters per 100 kilometers, we are more likely to have seven to eight liters of diesel. The volume leaves a little to be desired, here the diesel goes humming and clearly audible to the point. Also noticeable on our test car were loud rolling noise from the mounted Continental tires. These occurred only in a certain speed range between 100 and 120 kilometers per hour, not above and not below – otherwise they remained inconspicuous.
The manual six-speed gearbox can be used well, but it is quite soft. If the xenon headlights can still convince with the light output on the road during a dry night, they will lose a lot when the ground is wet. A better technique, such as modern LED headlights, would be an alternative.
Cheap entry price
But for a vehicle with a basic price starting from 19.490 euros in the equipment crystal and 26.490 euros in the equipment Sapphire one must also compromise. That costs the Tiguan with comparable engine not even in the basic equipment. We can recommend the Ssangyong XLV to everyone who does not attach importance to image and brand, but nevertheless always wanted to drive something else without giving up a trace of luxury.
