Fiat 500L: The compact van is grown
Fiat has given the compact 500L a facelift. Visually, the van remained almost unchanged – but 40 percent of the built-in parts are new and there has been a lot of technology.
The Fiat 500 is a success story for the Italian car manufacturer. Since 2007, Italy’s Mini has found more than two million buyers and is managed as an independent brand within the Group, which has since established itself in the market with further models, Convertible (2009), 500L (2012) and SUV 500X (2015). Now the new model generation of the 500L, which is offered in the three versions Urban, Cross and Wagon. Most noticeable at the front part are the small modifications of the engine grille and headlamp arrangement compared to the predecessor, which now take up the design of the Fiat 500 more.
But the Fiat 500 of 2007 also writes a success story. For 60 years ago, his predecessor, the Nuova 500, was launched two years before the Austin Mini by Sir Alec Issigonis. His journey into the heart of the “Automobilista” brought him about 3.9 million buyers and according to the Fiat 600,000 Cinquecento are still to drive on Italy’s roads today. However, today’s retromodel is not a benchmark for the old 500. Instead of the rear engine, the current 500 has a front-mounted engine with front-wheel drive as well as acceptable space conditions in the interior, which can withstand short distances on the rear two seats. Now starts, after the facelift of the 500 in 2015, the second generation of the 500L – with few visible changes.
2,200 new components, ie about 40 percent of the car, have been renewed. The body and interior were slightly modified. The rear bench is now somewhat higher and is thus to give the rear passengers a better view. The entertainment system Uconnect HD Live offers in the 500L with a seven-inch monitor the complete connectivity through Apple CarPlay or Android car. Thus, for example, the functions of the smartphone can be used for streaming music or dialing traffic or weather messages as well as telephoning. The safety devices include, among others, the autonomous city emergency braking assistant, which detects obstacles in front of the vehicle in the speed range from 5 km / h to 30 km / h and automatically initiates emergency braking, should the driver not react despite the risk of a collision.
Three variants on a platform
The new Fiat 500L is offered in the three body variants Urban, Cross and Wagon. They use the same platform, have a wheelbase of 2.612 meters and a turning circle of ten meters. The Urban has five seats and is an offer for urban transport with its small dimensions: length 4.242 meters, a width of 1.784 meters and a Height of 1.658 meters.
The 500L cross is unmistakable. This is achieved with a newly designed bumper, underrun protection, a striking radiator grille as well as 17-inch light-alloy wheels. The standard equipment includes the Uconnect HD Live entertainment system with a seven-inch touch screen. In terms of size, he lays something to 4.276 meters in length, 1.800 meters in width and 1.679 meters in height. The body, 25 millimeters higher, offers a little more ground clearance. The front drive with manual transmission of the cross has a “Drive Mode Selector”. It is located in the center console and adjusts the transmission of force to different road surfaces. The “normal” mode is reserved for everyday use. “Traction +” activates an electronic differential lock in the driven front axle in the speed range up to 30 km / h. In the “Gravity Control” position, the Bordelektronik as a hillside help system supports the driver during maneuvers in sloping ground. The position of the Drive Mode Selector is displayed in the central TFT display.
