Car show Geneva 2017
Around 200 exhibitors from 30 countries will be showing the coming months at the Geneva Motor Show and studies on the mobility of the future. An overview of the most important models.
With the Geneva Motor Show (9th to 19th March), the 2017 autonum- ent starts its journey. As usual, fast, large and expensive cars are once again the main focus of the exhibition at Lac Leman. In addition to Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo, the Ferrari 812 Superfast, Range Rover Velar and Renault Alpine, everyday cars such as the new Opel Insignia or the Ford Fiesta are among the stars.
Alfa Romeo 2017
Alfa is also no longer able to close the SUV trend. From the spring, the Italians will compete against Jaguar F-Pace, the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5 with the sporty positioned Stelvio. The first crossover of the Fiat subsidiary at the Giulia center classimousine is optically and technically oriented. For the drive, the Italians will first see a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbofan with 206 kW / 280 hp. Alternatively, a 2.2-liter diesel is available, which brings it to 154 kW / 210 hp. In addition, there will also be a top model with a 375 kW / 510 hp six-cylinder turbo benziner. All variants have all-wheel drive, an economical basic model with rear drive should follow later. In the field of assistance systems, Alfa offers, among other things, pedestrian detection, rear-view cameras, parking sensors and spacers. Aids for autonomous driving are not provided. The prices for the Italo SUV start at 47,500 euros.
After the models have become more and more similar, the study Q8 Concept showed a way out of the exterior monotony at the beginning of the year. In Geneva is now the second edition of the concept SUV, which is decidedly sporty. 2018 could start the serial version of the Q7 Coupe. The time until then bridges the VW daughter, among other things with the freshly lanced RS3 Sportback, which now with a 294 kW / 400 HP strengthened five-cylinder turbo. The landing gear was also tightened, the external changes remain unobtrusive. The prices start at 54,600 euros. The compact Bolide is complemented by a 50hp more powerful RS5 Coupe for around 80,000 euros.
After the saloon, BMW now also shows the combination variant of the new 5 Series. The Touring is slightly larger than its predecessor, with a length of 4.94 meters, and its width, wheelbase and height have also been slightly increased. The maximum luggage volume increases by 30 to 1,700 liters; And even with full seating is now a little more space for cargo (570 instead of 560 liters). Two petrol and diesel models are available for the drive. A four-cylinder engine with 185 kW / 252 hp (530i), a 250 kW / 340 hp six-cylinder (540i), which is coupled to an all-wheel drive, rides on top. Also the diesels have a four-cylinder, the 140 kW / 190 HP 520d, as well as a six-horsepower with 195 kW / 265 hp (530d), which is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Technically, the touring as the sedan moves closer to the big brother of the 7 series. Amongst other things, there is a tracking assistant who works up to 210 km / h and makes the BMW, in combination with the distance meter, at least on the motorway to a quasi-autonomous vehicle. In addition there is an assist assistant, which helps to 160 km / h during lane change and a side collision warning with active steering pulse. In addition, the keypad can be remotely controlled with the key in the hand while parking, warning on the motorway driveway possible ghost trips and allows the parking and booking of parking spaces from the cockpit.
With the study C-Aircross Concept, Citroen gives a very concrete outlook on its first mini-SUV. The serial version of the expressively designed study comes on the market at the end of the year and then replaces the mini Van Citroen C3 Picasso. With a length of 4.15 meters, the C-Aircross is positioned in the vicinity of Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and the Peugeot Group, which are also among its main competitors. Accordingly, an entry price in the range of 20,000 euros is to be expected.
The former Nobel branch of Citroen has now become its own brand. To match this, the French in Geneva present their so far the most independent model, a noble compact SUV, probably under the name DS7 Crossback against Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA.
In the year of its 70th company anniversary, Ferrari is showing a new F12 generation called the 812 Superfast. The brand’s new top-of-the-line model is the most powerful Ferrari ever powered by internal combustion engines. The 6.5-liter V12 boosts 588 kW / 800 hp and 718 newton-meters of torque to the rear wheels. This is the 1.5-Tonner in 2.9 seconds from the stand to 100 pace sprint and over 340 km / h fast. The consumption is correspondingly high with 15 liters. Although unmistakably a branch of the F12, the design of the 812 was modified in many details. So there are LED headlights and four instead of two round taillights. The aerodynamic design has also been extensively modified in order to guarantee more downforce than before. Ferrari has not yet provided information on the market launch and the price.
The small car best seller of the Cologne is growing up: In the eighth generation, the fiesta is positioned half a class higher, with a virtually unchanged dimensions outside and especially inside nobler. Compared to the very playful cockpit in the predecessor, the new version looks pleasantly clear, tidy and modern. The range of model variants is extended: In addition to a particularly luxurious Vignale edition, there is also a crossover line called “Active” for the first time. At the heart of the engine offer remains Ford’s three-cylinder petrol engine. The 1.0-liter turbo engine is again available with 74 kW / 100 hp, 92 kW / 125 hp and 103 kW / 140 hp. A new variant without turbocharger is used as a basic engine, but with an increased displacement of 1.1 kW / 70 hp or 63 kW / 85 hp. There will also be a diesel engine again when the Rhineland enters the market in the middle of the year. Prices are likely to rise slightly and start at around € 13,000.
This time it is fast. Had Honda of the last Civic generation as a brachial “Type R” model to the end of their construction time aside, the Sportversion comes this time shortly after start. A turbo engine is used again. The two-liter four-cylinder is expected to reach around 320 hp.
Without a combination, it does not happen in Europe: Hyundai therefore presents the design with extra large luggage compartment just a few weeks after the market launch of the new i30 generation. The second body version of the compact model stretches to 4.59 meters in length and pleases with a factual lines, subtle chrome jewelery and a slightly sloping roof line. Nevertheless, there is plenty of space behind – up to 1,650 liters are available. In the drive range, the Kombi offers the same portfolio as the sedan. The three petrol engines deliver 74 kW / 100 hp to 103 kW / 140 hp, the three diesel engines cover a performance spectrum of 70 kW / 95 hp to 100 kW / 136 hp. In some cases, the engines can be combined with a seven-stage dual clutch transmission. Prices are not yet known.
Also from small base space can be generated a lot of space, finds Kia and has the Picanto with the new edition the wheelbase stretched. For example, small cars with a length of just 3.60 meters offer much more space inside. The trunk also grows to around 1,000 liters. In the autumn, the Koreans will produce a turbo three-cylinder with 74 kW / 100 hp from the sucker units already familiar from the predecessor, a three-cylinder with 49 kW / 67 hp and a 1.2-liter four-cylinder with 62 kW / 84 hp Page. The prices for the new Picanto generation have not yet been fixed, but should continue to start at almost 10,000 euros.
The British off-road brand is expanding the Range Rover family. The new mid-class SUV Velar is to fill the gap between the compact Evoque and the half-meter longer Range Rover Sport. The market launch of the fourth model in the lifestyle-oriented family line of the English will take place in the current year. Its competitors include models such as the Audi Q5, BMW X4 and Maserati Levante.
The new brand flagship LS already celebrated its premiere in Detroit at the beginning of the year. For Geneva, the Toyota subsidiary lifted the hybrid version 500h. The drive train, which is already known for the Coupe LC, consists of a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine and an E-engine that delivers 264 kW / 359 hp and accelerates the top class saloon in 4.7 seconds to 100 km. Lexus has not yet revealed its fuel consumption and prices.
The second generation of the Mazda CX-5 is not completely new, but in large parts but clearly improved. The compact SUV remains largely faithful to the exterior and also sticks to the platform as well as the range of engines. Improvements were especially made. The interior now looks much more valuable, for a sportier appearance, the front and rear by a centimeter wider track, the center of gravity of the vehicle was slightly lowered. The most important technical changes are the G-Vectoring-Control already known from the Mazda 6. The system takes back the torque very quickly, which means more load on the front wheels and keeps the car better in the track. The prices will probably change little and start at around 25,000 euros.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class convertible debuts at the beginning of the spring. Like the already presented coupe, the four-seater is completely based on the first-named business sedan, this time on C-Class components. The convertible is thus almost a full-fledged four-seater: thanks to the wheelbase lengthened by eleven centimeters, passengers will have much more space in the future. The distance between the front and the rear seats has grown by five centimeters compared to the predecessor. In addition, the convertible offers in the rear Leselampen and even seat heating. The E-Class Cabriolet will presumably start with the same range of engines as the E-Class Coupé. The basic engine is a 135 kW / 184 hp petrol engine.
The second Geneva premiere, the Mercedes-AMG E 63 T model, shows just how far the performance potential in the business series now reaches. In the all-wheel drive combination, the 4.0-liter V8-Biturbo, which is known from the AMG GT, is offered in two versions with 420 kW / 571 hp and 450 kW / 612 hp. The sprint time of the second pair is given by Mercedes with 3.6 or 3.5 seconds for the S. At the top speed, it remains at the mandatory 250 km / h. However, this limit can be increased to 290 km / h at the factory.
Unlike an E-Class combination, the large SUV GLS is one of the rarest Mercedes models on Germany and probably also on Europe’s roads. Nevertheless, the Stuttgart show the new generation of their five-meter off-road vehicle not in the USA, but in Geneva. Probably also because the local public is very much in favor of the luxury. And with that, the biggest SUV of the brand is customary. The symbiosis of the terrain characteristics of the G-Class and the flair of the S-Class comes to market in the course of the year. In terms of exclusivity, however, the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet will not be able to measure itself. The 5.3-meter-long semi-convertible with four-wheel drive and portal axles costs more than half a million euros and will probably be built in only a few copies. In addition, Mercedes could show in the form of a study how a four-door variant of the sports car GT would look.
With the Eclipse Cross, Mitsubishi is closing the gap between the small compact SUV ASX and the mid-range crossover Outlander in autumn. The Tiguan challenger is focused on sporty design, all-wheel drive and probably also hybrid technology.
The Opel Insignia is regrettable. Actually, he should have been in the spotlight in Geneva, now it is probably the discussions around the takeover of the brand by PSA. The French are likely to be happy, Opel’s flagship against the predecessors generation but powerful revamped. Sedan and station wagon now stretch to the five-meter mark and also convert the length into a generous space offer. The mid-range model is also strongly oriented towards higher market segments in interior design. On the drive side, Opel promises more efficient engines and some smaller innovations. As before, the Insignia will be available exclusively with turbo-charged gasoline and diesel engines, which now cover a performance spectrum of 81 kW / 110 to 184 kW / 250 hp. New is an eight-speed automatic, which is to be offered exclusively in combination with all-wheel drive. Further innovations include a distance control with collision preventer, an active tracking assist with a counter-steering function and matrix light with 32 LED segments. Prices start at € 26,000.
Pagani Huayra Roadster
Six years ago, sports car pundit Pagani in Geneva with the presentation of the wing-door operator Huayra caused a break. Now the roadster version comes to the Lac Leman. It offers a maximum of exclusivity, stunning performance and two detachable roofs for almost 2.7 million euros. However, the wing doors fell victim to them. A Mercedes-AMG V12 biturbo engine, which delivers 562 kW / 764 hp and 1,000 newton meters via a seven-speed automatic transmission and an electronically controlled locking differential, to the rear axle, is used to drive the almost 1300 kilogram-weight convertible.
After the premieres of the SUV models 3008 and 5008 at the Autoshow Paris last autumn, it leaves Peugeot in Geneva rather quiet. The French show some new variants of their crossover and have some special models in the program.
There were no combi coaches from feeding house. With the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is now changing. The loader-optimized version of the high class limousine is, of course, not a simple loading master, but a shapely shooting brake with powerful engines. In addition, the sports car manufacturer continues to expand the program for the Panamera. The Turbo S E-Hybrid is the second and most powerful hybrid version of the saloon. Not only that: With its 500 kW / 680 hp, it also clearly tops the versions with internal combustion engines. The relatively theoretical standard consumption value is 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers. The price list starts at 185.736 euros, the long version is available from 199.183 euros.
At the beginning of 2016 Renault had presented the first series-series study of the new Alpine after a whole series of showcars. The finished sports car is now in Geneva and is to be the starting shot for a whole model family under the revived traditions brand. The mid-engined sports car in the size of an Audi TT is powered by a four-cylinder turbo with around 250 hp and is due to low weight speed 100 from the stand in about 4.5 seconds. For the market launch, there is a “Premiere Edition” for the price of just under 60,000 euros. The Alaskan, a medium-sized pick-up based on the Navara from Allianz Partner Nissan, is equal to several numbers larger. Unlike the Mercedes X-Class announced on the same platform, the basic model is only slightly modified, and the main model is South America. The measurement program of the French will be completed by the second generation of the mid-class SUV Koleos, which is already on display at the trade fair in Beijing, which is now based on the Nissan X-Trail. The Mini-SUV Captur also gets a lift at the middle of its life cycle.
Although the small car Ibiza received a lift only a year and a half ago, the new generation is already announcing itself in Geneva. In addition to a strongly altered exterior design, which has great similarities with the big brother Leon, generation four thanks to new platform offers significantly changed proportions. Above all, the Spaniard has increased. In the future, the Ibiza will also be equipped with options which are generally known from larger vehicles – such as full-LED headlights or distance motors. At the petrol market, Seat offers only three-cylinder engines with a displacement of 1.0 liters in June. In addition to the basic 1.8 MPI petrol engine with a choice of 48 kW / 65 hp or 55 kW / 75 hp, the loaded 1.0 TSI is also available with 70 KW / 95 hp and 85 KW / 115 hp or a 66 kW / 90 hp natural gas version. In addition, there is the revised compact sportsman Leon Cupra, which now comes as standard to 221 kW / 300 hp.
For Skoda, the Geneva Salon is characterized by expansion and renewal. Thus, the newly launched Octavia series in the RS 245 receives a new top model with 180 kW / 245 hp, the Kodiaq family is growing by a sturdy “scout” version and a sporty “Sportline” model. In addition, the Czechs show the easily lured golf competitor Rapid, which receives an infotainment and technology update in addition to a polished front.
The compact SUV XV should appeal to Subaru already in the first generation new customer circles beyond the sworn brands fans. The reissue does this with a sleek body even more consistent. Boxers and all-wheel drive are self-evident, the compact SUV in the second half of the year is likely to hit the market.
After the Suzuki Swift in the last two generations at least on the outside hardly to be distinguished from each other, the latest edition of the small car again appears visually more independent. Above all, the rounded front line distinguishes it from its predecessors. The character of the five-door driver is less likely to change: he remains small, light and agile.
At Ssangyong, it has now become a tradition to announce new series models with multi-stage concept cars. In September 2015, the Koreans gave an initial outlook at a new edition of the medium-class SUV Korando at the Frankfurt Motor Show with the XAV study. In Geneva, the concept vehicle XAVL is the second predecessor – but significantly longer and with seven seats. The series model is likely to premiere at the IAA in autumn.
Instead of launching a new generation, Toyota will donate a second facelift to the small car Yaris in spring 2017 after the extensive model revision in 2014. This gives the Japanese in the summer in addition to a refreshed look even a new gasoline and a sports version with 154 KW / 210 HP. Prices are not yet known. The i-TRIL Concept study is clearly more spectacular than the revised city car. The Swedes consistently push ahead with the renewal of their model range. After the 90s series has been newly launched in the past two years, the renovation of the smaller 60 series begins in Geneva. The mid-class SUV XC 60, which is held in the new, elegant design style of the brand, is the start. For the drive, there are only four-cylinder engines, both as diesel and petrol engines. Between Phaeton and Passat VW is placing a new limousine flagship with the Arteon mid-year. The four door is something like the successor of the Passat-Ablegers CC, but appears clearly more independent. An important new element is a large and wide opening tailgate, which allows easy access to the large luggage compartment. The competitors include models such as the Audi A5 Sportback and the BMW 4 Series GT. The second important novelty of the Wolfsburger is the Tiguan Allspace, which was already presented at the beginning of the year, the seven-seat long version of the compact SUV.
