Volkswagen T-Roc: sincere crossover
Even before the start of the IAA in Frankfurt, Volkswagen is presenting the T-Roc on Lake Como in Italy. With the compact SUV, the manufacturer wants to mix the crossover market.
The Volkswagen brand is not always the first to deal with new segments. The manufacturer prefers to study the market, to analyze the competition – and then to strike with a purposefully developed product. And so it is also with the T-Roc, a crossover SUV of the compact class, which is supposed to stir up the market dominated by models like the Opel Mokka.
With a length of 4.23 meters, the T-Roc almost exactly corresponds to the current golf. With 1.82 meters, however, it is wider again, and the height of 1.57 meters corresponds to its nature as a crossover: With such a car, the owner wants to express that he is across the country, on rocky climbs and in demanding terrain at home. Just by chance you are on your way to the office.
Six power levels
The entry-level petrol engine is a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine with 85 kW / 115 hp, and a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 110 kW / 150 hp and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 122 kW / 190 hp. The diesel program consists of a 1.6-liter TDI with 85 kW / 115 hp and two 2.0-liter engines with 150 and 190 hp. The entry models are available only with front-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission; the most powerful engines are all-wheel drive and seven-speed DKG mandatory; The 150 hp engines offer free choice. What is not there is a hybrid version or an electric T-Roc. The market opportunities for this are estimated as low in Wolfsburg, although this is by no means to be understood as a rejection of e-mobility. With the T-Roc one may, however, adjust to a different variant: It could be a high-performance variant be submitted – the loose 300 hp will afford.
The T-Roc is already the most sporting offer in its segment: The MQB chassis (modular cross-section box) shines with the other group models through a tight and precise coordination, with the T-Roc there is the progressive steering from the GTI and the parameters Of the engine and chassis can be sharpened using the driving mode switch.
Technology in front of comfort
Depending on the model, the interior shines with optional veneer carvings that give a fresh and colorful accent, and the seats are also sophisticated and partly multi-colored. On the whole, the material quality is no longer as superior as it was in the Piech standard. VW wants to be among the masses ahead; Aspirations, Mercedes-Benz as a premium brand to attack, one is in Wolfsburg obviously no longer. Instead of investing money in upholstered surfaces, ornamental seams and a particularly solid ambience, VW has invested in an infotainment system and assistance systems at the T-Roc, which in this segment clearly raise the bar. And this should be the right decision for the young target group.
From the outside, the T-Roc remains true to the study of the same name from 2014. Many stylistic elements, including the proportions of the then Targa study, have made it into the series. The contrast strip extending above the side windows, which drops down to the rear of the C-pillar, has now also succumbed to competition models such as the Jeep Compass; but it was first seen in the VW study. And the coupé-inclined C-pillar is reminiscent of the Audi Q2, with its muscularly shaped flanks and the wide taillights, the T-Roc overall looks, however, higher than the sister model from Ingolstadt. By the way, VW offers a rich range of two-color paints.
The T-Roc will experience his Messedebüt in a few weeks at the Frankfurt IAA, in October he will be driving for the first time. The fact that he subsequently claims the top position in his segment is not excluded.
